Sample from upcoming pattern -

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Just a few little modifications and I have a whole new look from a pattern I have in the works.  Won’t say who it’s for but she has a birthday coming up real soon.  Hmm – wonder who it could be?

Completed Applique Block

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

It’s done!  Took quite a few un-sewings but I’m finally happy with it.  Scroll down and compare to the one with the plaid rose.  Isn’t this much better?

It’s Melting!

Sure looks a lot different than 10 days ago!  So nice to see it’s not caved in from all the snow that was on top of it.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions …

Warning!  Partially finished applique block with potential problem fabric – proceed with caution.

Does the word “bright” apply here?  That’s intentional – it’s a companion piece for wallhanging I did a few years ago from the same fabrics.  But the plaid is the new kid on the block and just isn’t working for me.  Which is why there are 2 huge, gaping holes where the other roses are supposed to be.  Anyway, I’m having a hard time finding the right fabric in my stash.  And I’m still really snowed in so not getting more any time soon.  And I need this block finished in less than a week!  What to do?  I guess I’ll try another fabric and see how it looks when appliqued in place.  Hope I don’t have to remove too many roses before I get it right!

Another Applique Block Completed!

Really enjoying applique!  Ordered some straw needles and 11A applique needles from www.roserushbrooke.com.  I was using old needles I had on hand and every stitch was a minor struggle.  These new straw needles are very thin and just glide through the fabric effortlessly - a real treat!  The applique needles are good too, but I like the extra length of the straw needles.  Well, except when I run short of thread and don’t have enough left to tie off – then the shorter applique needles come to the rescue.  I’ve just finished this very cute block.

In addition to the new needles, I started using Bottom Line thread by Superior Threads and it is great for applique!  Highly recommended by me, the applique novice.  And you can get a variety of colors in the prewound SuperBOBs 12 packs.

Jeep in Almost 6′ of Snow …

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Well, it’s finally buried.  Yep – completely covered.  Here’s my husband standing next to my Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Maybe the snow is just partway up the side and piled on top?  NOT!  He dug down to the roof so that I could see.

The snowshoe trip out to the paved (but unplowed – 12″ snow there) road took about 6 hours.  The trip back in took about 8.  My husband figured with the snow that mashed down under every step multiplied by the number of steps, that they compressed a mile of snow on the way out.  Then it warmed up some and rained a little and they got to do it all again coming back the next day – but uphill and carrying packs, one of which weighed 37 pounds.

So why do we live out here in the boonies?  Here’s a shot of our “neighborhood”.  Need I say more?

Good thing we don’t have to use this door …

6 More Weeks of Winter?!?

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

So the groundhog saw his shadow.  Hmm.  Not what I wanted to hear!  We’ve been getting snow pretty steadily the past 3 days although it is not snowing today.  We’re gaining density now rather than depth as the old snow sags down under the new.  So we’re still under 5′ despite the steady blessings from above.  We tend to look at the bright side – ample water for the summer.  I’ll post another picture or 2 later today if our internet holds out.  Seems there’s a tree that leans under the weight of the snow that is interfering with our satellite signal.
